Vlado Kristl
19 Sep - 07 Dec 2025
Opening: Thursday, 18.9.2025, 7 pm
Born in Zagreb, Vlado Kristl (1923–2004) was one of the most important and radical representatives of the German auteur film.
The Badischer Kunstverein is focussing on the entire oeuvre of the painter, graphic artist, poet, filmmaker and performance artist. The full spectrum of Kristl’s still influential films will be screened in a large cinema in the main gallery space: from the early animated films, created in the former Yugoslavia, to key works of independent cinema from the 1960s, along with anarchic feature films of post-war cinema, and all the way to the manifestoes of a late work, which advocated improvisation and freedom and opposed oppression.
Accompanying the films, and a highlight of the exhibition, is an ensemble of rarely exhibited drawings and studies, screenplays, Kristl’s publications as well as an extensive selection of archival materials and documents from Kristl’s personal estate.
