ART IN BERLIN
Exhibition from January 25, 2008
1914-1968
The new presentation of the collection starts out with several avant-garde movements such as Expressionism, Dadaism, and Constructivism, which articulated contradiction artisticly. They gave answers to important questions concerning social and political issues. The exhibition shows the defamation and esthetic exploitation of these artistic movements by the totalitarian regime of the 1930s and 1940s. The reneval of the artistic values of these movements by a new generation of artists after World War II is yet another topic. Emphasis is also given to the years around 1968. In the GFR a critical generation confronted the land of the “Wirtschaftswunder” with its recent past while GDR artists often worked aloof from the officially announced economic optimism.
