October 29 - November 27, 2010

As early as 2002, Rita McBride won the public competition for the artistic development of the Effnerplatz in Munich with the proposal of her monumental sculpture Mae West. The “Kunst-am-Bau” project was to be realised in connection with the tunnel construction at the Middle Ring Road, Section East. Controversial discussions in politics, the media and the public were menacing the ambitious project for more than six years before it was irrevocably approved by the city of Munich in 2008. In November 2010 Rita McBride’s sculpture is finally scheduled to be inaugurated.

Mae West is constructed of 42 vertical carbon fibre tubes arranged in a spiralled twist taking its geometry from a hyperbolic paraboloid. It will be the first of such a structure to be raised in this high tech material known for its strength and light weight properties. With a height of 52m it will reach monumental dimensions and has thus the potential to become a new landmark in the city of Munich.

On the occasion of the completion of this sculpture, Galerie Klüser 2 is presenting an exhibition entitled Way Out South – Mae West Superstore. The superstore is a concept store which includes original works by the artist along with Mae West inspired merchandise and Mae West process artefacts.
