ASAKO SHIROKI
On the Floor, Behind the Window
24 January - 16 February 2014

In her artistic work, which generally takes the form of sculptures and installations, Asako Shiroki operates between functionalism and abstraction. The sculptural structures of her works first draw the viewer’s attention by appropriating the dimensions and shapes of everyday objects such as furniture items, frames and pavements. However, their functionalism is consistently broken by the artist inasmuch as she allows the structures to run into nothing or translates the objects into sculptural installations.
Shiroki is always an attentive observer of her surroundings, discovering in them the unnoticed rhythms or symmetries of objects; she meticulously analyses the forms and dynamics of these and then visualises the resulting structures in her works.
Shiroki herself describes her approach as “listening to the materials and objects”.
