JULIEN GROSSMANN
Vibrating Revivals
29 July - 21 August 2011

Julien Grossmann's oeuvre is concerned with socio-cultural, global processes, on which he reflects using a wide spectrum of media. He is particularly fascinated by the interface between music and fine art. In his current exhibition "Vibrating Revivals" he focuses on the dynamics of sound and combines them with clear visual aesthetics. His sound and object installations examine political backgrounds, developing new perspectives on normative structures, which the artist negotiates in previously unexplored territory: the fictive world of sound. By giving a physical presence to auditory perceptions, Grossmann creates visual 'soundscapes'. The illusions and imaginary worlds he creates lead to the deconstruction of old, familiar patterns of representation and undermine cultural encoding by means of their simplicity.
It is the controllable aspect of an uncontrollable whole that gives these works their charm. Through his work, Grossmann questions the notion of authenticity by retaining a minimal view while illuminating complex cultural and sensory contexts.

Julien Grossmann is currently receiving a fellowship from the Conseil Général de la Moselle, France in the context of our International Studio Programme. More info: http://www.juliengrossmann.com
