Room X at Bortolami Gallery is pleased to present “Piece of blue and other proxies” an installation of new work by artist Kristen Jensen. A small neck vase, a spill, and a bottle of beer are some of the objects laid out for the viewer that fluctuate between representation and abstraction. The artist’s desire for control and perfection is challenged by both the unpredictability of the medium and the traces of the artist’s body. This tension is reflected in the flaws, cracks, and subtle finishes that transform everyday objects into things both pathetic and poetic.
A text written by Rebecca Armstrong:
“Kristen Jensen’s objects express a kind of fragile longing, a physicality at once delicate and persistant. I am never tempted to imagine their origins but instead their subjectivities. They form a kind of communion with one another, which, if I am not welcomed in, I am welcomed to empathize with. Despite their tenderness, they are not hesitant or uncertain; they are definite, though what they are definite about could be uncertainty, a balance between being crushed and crushing. I don’t miss the romance of crushes, either. The tenderness of these objects is similar to the raw feeling one has with a crush, an overwhelming vulnerability that is somehow private while still being visible.”
Kristen Jensen was born in 1976 in Glens Falls, New York. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
