ANCIENT & MODERN invites you to ‘Punk Shop’, for which Kane produces an exhibition that messes with the gallery as a place for an art experience. In doing so he pays a backhanded tribute to the liberties extended by these spaces for artists through a notional fusing of the adolescent Joke Shop, a favourite environment of Kane’s, with his first adult art experience of walking through the door of ‘Seditionaries’ in 1977, Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren’s boutique on the King’s Road.
Kane’s had a recent solo exhibition ‘The Unwanted’, BQ, Berlin (2012, cat) and collaborated with Simon Periton in ‘Garden of Reason’, Ham House, London, (2012, cur.
Tessa Fitzjohn) whose ‘8 fculptures’ subsequently showed at Frieze Sculpture Park (cur. Clare Lilley). Others include ‘The Trongate Codex’, The Modern Institute & New Jerseyy, Glasgow International Festival (2012 cat); ‘Home for Orphan Dishes’, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (2011, solo); ‘Genius with Talent’, de Appel, Amsterdam (2011, group); ‘The Asbo Mystery Plays and other Public Works, The Gild the Lily Files’ (with Simon Periton), Sadie Coles HQ, London (2011, cat); ‘Vanitas Vanitatum Omnia Vanitas’, London College of Fashion (solo); ‘Rude Britannia: British Comic Art’, Tate Britain, London (both 2010); ‘Life Class / Today’s News’, Artangel/ Jerwood for Channel 4 television; ‘Insiders: Experience, Practice and Know-wow’, CAPC Bordeaux (2009).
