EVA BERENDES
New Reliefs
17 March - 23 April 2011
ANCIENT & MODERN presents new wall-based sculptural reliefs by Eva Berendes in her second exhibition at the gallery.
Made from plaster, they reveal the means of their production by exposing the imprint of the materials from which they were cast. Formally they recall fragments of brutalist architecture while historically they acknowledge mid 20th-century artists who made the medium their own.
Eva’s practice draws on the history of abstraction in sculpture and painting, craft and applied arts. ‘new Reliefs’ focusses upon a singular body of work, while her concurrent show which opened last month at S1 Artspace, Sheffield, ‘People and Events will be the decoration’ brings together many different elements, including coloured metal screens and hand-printed pedestals with found ceramics against the backdrop of a silk-painted muslin curtain, all coalescing into a kind of theatrical stage-set.
Eva Berendes (b.1974) exhibits in ‘Construction and its Shadow’, Leeds City Art Gallery (to 5 June), ‘Making is Thinking’, Witte de Witte, Rotterdam (to 1 May), ‘der Menschen Klee’, KiT, düsseldorf (to 3 April) and ‘Madame Realism’, MARRES, Center for Contemporary Culture, Maastricht (12 March-5 June). A publication will be launched during the exhibition at Ancient & Modern.
