ANCIENT & MODERN presents an art exhibition by Hans-Peter Feldmann.
Shown for the first time, this installation by Feldmann consists of one-hundred and seventy-four examples of stamps each bearing a different image of an historical painting of a nude.
Some small countries and states have created limited runs of elaborate stamps, designed mainly to be bought by stamp collectors and philatelics. Feldmann’s installation includes stamps with details from paintings such as ‘The Horrors of War’ (1638) by Peter Paul Rubens and ‘Nude in an Armchair’ (1900) by Pierre August Renoir. Both were published by Ajman, an Emirate of the United Arab Emirates, who issued its own stamps between 1964 and 1973 celebrating everything from lunar modules to Mozart to makes of European vehicle manufacturers. Other nudes depicted on the stamps come from paintings as varied as Bosch and Bronzino, Toulouse-Lautrec and Bonnard.
Hans-Peter Feldmann (born 1941 Dusseldorf, Germany), has exhibited widely in Europe since the 1960s. More recently he has shown at 303 Gallery New York, the Venice Biennale (both 2009), Simon Lee Gallery (2008) and Arnolfini, Bristol (2007) as well as in the group show “Objectivités: La photographie à Düsseldorf“, Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris (2008).
