LUKE GOTTELIER
Tie Paintings
8 October - 12 November 2011

Ancient & Modern presents 'Tie Paintings' by Luke Gottelier, a new series of paintings on canvas installed at 3 Yeoman's Row, South Kensington. Cock and balls, tits, turds and arses are stock in trade for satirists and caricaturists, exemplified in Thomas Rowlandson's 18th-century bawdy bosum-gropers to Steve Bell's cartoons for The Guardian which are frequently hilarious about often tragic circumstances.

Gottelier's paintings include all of the above subjects as well as chairs, giants, horses, farts, sofas, biscuits, centaurs, shoes, chips and painters. His titles are particularly axiomatic, such as 'Self-Portrait as a Farting Centaur' or 'Shit a Ruler off a Cliff', demonstrating irreverence as well as respect for the history of painting.

Luke Gottelier was born 1968 and lives in London. His public gallery exhibitions include 'Newspeak Li', Saatchi Gallery; 'Use & Mention', Stephen Lawrence Gallery, London (2011); 'Paintings of Animals and Leisure', outpost, norwich (solo 2005); 'Picture Room', cur. Goshka Macuga, Gasworks (2003); 'John Moores 22', The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and 'Reality Check', British Council (both 2002).
