MARCO CHIANDETTI + RUDOLF POLANSZKY
22 March ~ 28 April, 2012

Ancient & Modern presents a single work ‘koma’ (1983) by Vienna-based artist Rudolf Polanszky (b.1951) in what is his second presentation at the gallery, partnered with new sculptures and drawings by Marco Chiandetti (b.1973), a young italian artist based in London. Polanszky’s ‘koma’ was made one night when the artist attached to his head, torso, and legs paint-brushes dipped in red, blue and yellow paint and, laying down upon sheets of paper, endeavoured to make what he calls ‘night and Sleep drawings’. Polanszky’s somnambulant gestures, documented on Super-8 film, consequently created a twometre painting on this haphazard canvas.
Marco Chiandetti’s installation of cast aluminium sculptures and graphite drawings hold the body of the artist and the physical labour of doing, its force and impressions, materially as well as temporally. in the work of both artists, there is presence and absence in the negotiation and representation of the body, each piece carrying a sense of the phantom limb or corporeal body that was directly involved in producing its final impression.
