The Buchmann Galerie is pleased to present an exhibition with new works by Fiona Rae (b. 1963).
A catalog with a conversation between Fiona Rae and Dan Perfect will accompany the exhibition.
Fiona Rae’s oeuvre is distinguished by a complex, powerfully expressive, and highly individual visual language.
Her works are at once captivating and perplexing. They are like a net in which the surplus of our visual and material culture is caught. “It’s all transformed and transmuted and transgressed and translated; things don’t stay exactly as I find them, my source material undergoes changes.” 1
Floral patterns and cute little animals are countered with powerful, abstract brushstrokes. Expressionist gestures are found next to delicate, graphic ramifications or graphic forms. Fiona Rae integrates these different pictorial elements into her painting in order to expand once again the possibilities of abstraction and of painting in general in her own visual language. New features of the paintings in this exhibition include some of the evocative and poetic captions on the surface of the paintings. They extend the levels of image and meaning, yet because of the virtuoso complexity of the compositions they are able to escape any unambiguous classification.
Fiona Rae’s works have been shown in museums and galleries internationally, including the Hayward Gallery, London; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art; and Tate Britain.
Solo exhibitions have been presented by the Kunsthalle Basel, das ICA London, and the Carré d’Art—Musée d’Art Contemporain, Nîmes. Fiona Rae was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2002.
