HILMA AF KLINT
Gallery 1

This is the first exhibition in the UK of the work of Hilma af Klint, a Swedish artist (1862-1944) who is considered one of the first true 'moderns'. Her paintings recall other 20th century artists from Kandinsky to Mondrian, though they predate them. Af Klint made her symbolist-style paintings inspired by spiritualism and the occult in secret. She stipulated that they not be exhibited until 20 years after her death, a suggestion that she appreciated being ahead of her time.
