"Akademie"

Sutton Lane is pleased to announce the third exhibition in London of Christoph Ruckhäberle.
With this new series of paintings Ruckhäberle embraces aesthetics of primitivism. His painted characters are no longer found in large troupes; they now exist as individuals or in small groups. Similarly, the psychological alienation alluded to in earlier works has been replaced by a physical estrangement. Ruckhäberle’s stylisation of his characters means they exist as almost figurative abstractions, while paradoxically becoming all the more concrete in essence. They directly reference the masks used within the tradition of Noh theatre. Like the Noh masks Ruckhäberle’s carnivalesque characters stare out from their blank, cut-out faces as if awaiting their cue.
Past exhibitions include solo Exhibition at Sutton Lane Paris, "Zurueck zur Figur", Hypo Kunsthalle, Munich (cat.), "Made In Leipzig", Sammlung-Essl, Klosterneuburg, Austria(cat.), "Ballkuenstler", Museum der Bildenden Kuenste, Leipzig (cat.), "From Leipzig: works from the Ovitz Family Collection", Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio, "Life After Death: New Leipzig Paintings from the Rubell Family Collection", MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA.
Ruckhäberle's work has recently been acquired by MOMA, the Rubell Family Collection, the Essl Collection, the Olbricht Collection, the Saatchi Collection, the Ovitz Family Collection and the Arario Collection.
