Center is pleased to present the artists Maria Loboda and Lin May in the exhibition “Free Love”.

Today’s understanding of the concept of free love has been shaped to a large part by the myth of promiscuity of the sixties and seventies. In fact, the ideals subsumed under this term since the 19th century date back to pre-Christian times and have manifested themselves in various movements. These often spiritualistic movements share a utopian political and social agenda and promote the ideals of pacifism and egalitarianism.

The idea of community which is associated with the term of free love took a particular form
in the period from the thirties to the fifties at the Black Mountain College which Maria Loboda
refers to in her work “Myth and Education”. Poets, visual artists, composers and dancers created an egalitarian society on the model of interdisciplinary and anti-authoritarian education.
Loboda’s book covers of fictitious collections of poetry by Black Mountain poets invoke the utopian ideals of the times. However, the ironic undertone of their titles convey a certain distance from the visions that were developed at the Black Mountain College.

Lin May’s work “Free Love” presents a somewhat dystopic perspective on the issue. The group of family members sitting next to each other but alienated from one another, appears like a fragile, foreign construction. The idea of a community based on free and egalitarian relationships is represented as an illusion. Instead of a communitarian togetherness, the sculpture shows a group of isolated individuals who have lost their hold in the community due to their strong desire for freedom.

Maria Loboda lives in Frankfurt, where she studies at the Städelschule. In 2007 she participated
in group exhibitions at the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle Bonn and at the Frankfurter Kunstverein. She had her first solo-exhibition at the Galerie Ritter & Staiff in Frankfurt am Main in 2006.

Lin May lives in Berlin. She studied at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf and founded the exhibition space Center in 2003. Next to various group exhibitions in Düsseldorf and Berlin, she had solo-exhibitions at the Galerie Jacky Strenz in 2007 and the Galerie Thomas Flor in 2006.
