Under the title “KIDS”, Contemporary Fine Arts is presenting an exhibition with portraits of children from 24 August until 22 September.
Historical portraits of children are among the most sought-after genres of the Old Masters’ art-dealing. Due to the achievements of modern art, the portrait of a child is a rather neglected genre in recent decades. Representation and the schema of childlike characteristics are hard to combine with the challenge of modern imagery. With this exhibition, we want to confront this subject matter and contrast works by contemporary artists which have been explicitly created for this show with historical portraits of the Classic Modernism and the post-war period. Recalling Larry Clark’s eponymous film, the title of the exhibition already suggests that the presentation is no homage to childlike innocence and cheerful playfulness. The exhibition consciously begins in 1903 with Paula Modersohn-Becker, an artist who constitutes a break within the traditional genre and who questioned the myth of the blithe childhood.
The exhibition presents works by Georg Baselitz, Marc Brandenburg, Cecily Brown, Larry Clark, Marlene Dumas, Christa Dichgans, Peter Doig, Marcel Eichner, Albrecht Fuchs, Cuny Janssen, Natasja Kensmil, Hans Laabs, August Macke, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Emil Nolde, Raymond Pettibon, Tal R, Anselm Reyle, Dana Schutz, Chaim Soutine, Gert & Uwe Tobias, Andy Warhol, and Walter Wellenstein.
