THOMAS HIRSCHHORN
Equality Float
22 September – 25 November, 2011
La Douane / Galerie Chantal Crousel is pleased to announce the exhibition of Thomas Hirschhorn, “Equality Float”.
The eponymous work of the artist, who is invited to the Swiss pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale, represents a carnival float measuring 21 metres long by 6 meters wide.
Presented for the first time in France, “Equality Float” is an allegory of the community, highlighting both its ills and their remedies; a reflection on the notions of equality / inequality. It is a theme that the artist raises through the interaction of opposites, of political and philosophical essays (Spinoza, Deleuze, Bataille, Gramsci).
The work is paired with a text of the German philosopher Marcus Steinweg, with whom Thomas Hirschhorn works past ten years, specially commissioned to be included in the work produced and presented at the MACRO of Vigo in 2008.
During the exhibition, a large documentation is offered by a library composed of the bibliography of the work, preparatory drawings and other methodological notes.
