Get DEPRESSED by it.

Get good at it again.
Jon Pylypchuk’s newest body of work flaunts his staple tragicomic caricatures, but now in the form of 2-D paintings. He generously pours enamel pigment onto canvas to create these imposing faces. His oeuvre depicts a pathetic anthropomorphic world of self-deprecating beings that touches upon issues of love, longing, loss, and death.
FEED YOUR BABY VALIUM CONTINUES in this same vein, but with a pivot in theatricality; without text or title to guide the viewer, each face is now a blown up close up, forcing a direct minimalist relationship to the abject personalities. Personalities that have pervaded his diverse body of sculptures, drawings, paintings, videos and collage for nearly two decades.
Pylypchuk was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1972 and lives and works in Los Angeles. He was a founding member of the collaborative Royal Art Lodge while at the UNIVERSITY of Manitoba and received his MFA from UCLA in 2001. His paintings, sculptures drawings and videos have been exhibited widely in the United States, Europe and Asia. His work is in the collections of the LACMA, MoCA Los Angeles, The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The National Gallery of Canada, S.M.A.K. Ghent, Moorilla Museum Tazmania and a recent acquisition by the Hammer Museum.
