SOPHIE VON HELLERMANN
"Judgement Day"
Chisenhale Gallery is pleased to present Judgement Day, Sophie von Hellermann’s first major exhibition in a UK public gallery.
For her exhibition at Chisenhale, von Hellermann is exhibiting a new series of large-scale paintings. Made using water-based acrylic paint, her works have a fragile, fleeting and spontaneous appearance. They combine eclectic cultural, scientific and literary references in imaginary scenarios, so that personal and collective histories are made to intersect and collide.
Von Hellermann’s paintings comprise a compelling form of visual biography and autobiography, replete with fantasy, sentiment and desire. They present a generous array of arresting and memorable images that look both backwards and forwards in time. In her paintings von Hellermann restlessly explores various emotive locations and scenarios populated with intriguing characters and narrative fragments.
The paintings contain the residue of experiences undergone or fantasised, engaging viewers through the feelings, moods and sensations conveyed via von Hellermann’s light touch and vivid imagery.
There is an accompanying publication which contains 150 colour illustrations and essays by Clemens Krümmel, Andrew Renton, Emily Speers Mears and Anne Pontegnie – providing a broad overview of von Hellermann’s work over the past ten years. Judgement Day retails at £19.00, however Chisenhale Gallery is offering a special exhibition price to its audience of £15.00.
Judgement Day is published by Koenig Books, London and has been generously supported by WestLB - Bank der neuen Antworten.
