"Dekoration"
05 April - 11 May, 2013
This is Ruckhäberle's first exhibition of purely abstract work. The bright colored patterns of the clothes of earlier painting's figures and interior backgrounds have become autonomous. Medium- and large-sized gouaches cover the walls of the gallery and transform the exhibition space into an interior of its own. The vibrant compositions oscillate between flatness and dynamic space: at times waves, stripes and arabesques are woven into flat ornaments, while sometimes they develop a rather spatial dynamic. The individual forms stand out from one another through incisive color contrasts. Despite the dynamism of the absurd and twisted patterns, Ruckhäberle's paintings are far from the irritating optical effects of Op Art. Rather, color and shape become protagonists in the play of proportions, contrast and space. The decorative is not a casual side-effect in Ruckhäberle's new paintings, but an integral part of his pictorial explorations.
Christoph Ruckhäberle was born in 1972 in Pfaffenhofen. He studied between 1991 and 1992 at the California Institute of Arts Valencia, and graduated in his Master studies in Leipzig under Prof. Arno Rink. His work is part of the permanent collections of MoMA, New York and the Migros Museum, Zurich. Past exhibitions include Museo Nacional de la Estampa, Mexico City (2012), Migros Museum, Zurich (2009), Manifesta 7 (2008), Frye Art Museum, Seattle (2007) and Triumph of Painting, Saatchi Gallery, London (2006). He lives and works in Leipzig.
