Shannon Finley "Specters into Signals"
In his bright coloured paintings, Finley constructs multiple layers of paint on top of each other and creates prismatic spaces and figures. Translucent collage-like shapes evoke geometrically abstracted formations seemingly holographic and three-dimensional.
The flow of colour, reflections, strong contrasts of glossy and matt, bright fluorescent and glitter irritate the eye. Some sections seem highlighted, others vanish. His painting demand more than an immediate encounter.
Finley references contemporary pop culture and the esthetics of early videogames. At the same time he reuses ideas of colour mysticism and sacral arts and translates his paintings to an almost spiritual realm.
