At the core of the work of Isidoro Valcárcel Medina (Murcia, 1937) lies a critical stance towards the conventions that normally govern the production, distribution and presentation of art. This critical attitude is expressed in a deviant appropriation of social and cultural conventions that, while respecting their formal rules, at the same time subverts their content and meaning. Ultimately, what is at stake in Isidoro Valcárcel Medina's serenely insubordinate attitude is the question of the individual as an emancipated subject. For this exhibition at Culturgest, he has conceived a series of works that question the notion of the border, more precisely the geographical border between Portugal and Spain, as a political and cultural construct that shapes us as individuals.
