LOURDES CASTRO
Os meus Álbuns de Família
um a um
29 October 2016 – 8 January 2017
Curator Miguel Wandschneider
The work of Lourdes Castro (Funchal, 1930) is well-known in Portugal, where she has enjoyed two major retrospective exhibitions, the first at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, in 1992, and the second, which she shared with her life and work partner Manuel Zimbro, at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, in 2010. Last year offered us the chance to discover the many books that the artist has produced since the 1950s, once again at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The time has now come to browse through her Family Album, a set of books, currently numbering thirty-six, which since 1963 the artist has been filling with images and texts from the most diverse origins, taking as her leitmotif what has been the theme of almost all her work since then: the shadow. At this exhibition, her Family Album will be opened page by page.
