LUISA CORREIA PEREIRA
The summoning of all beings
14 May - 13 August, 2011
For almost four decades, Luisa Correia Pereira (Lisbon, 1945-2009) produced an idiosyncratic group of paintings and drawings, with moments of great splendour, even though they continue to be largely unknown or regarded with indifference by the art world in general.
In 2003, the EDP Foundation organised a solo exhibition of Luisa Correia Pereira’s work in partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Modern Art Centre (Fiat Lux: Paris–Lisbon), which deliberately set out to remedy such a great injustice. The exhibition established a counterpoint between a selection of works (acrylic paintings on canvas and gouaches and watercolours on paper) from the early 1970s and a group of paintings and drawings from the late 1990s, most of which belonged to two important series (Children’s Games and Sports and Games).
The summoning of all beings is centred on Luisa Correia Pereira’s graphic work (metal engravings, linocuts, xylographs and monotypes), dating from 1971 to 1974, a period during which she lived in Paris and which was foundational and fundamental in her artistic practice. Despite the extraordinary importance of this group of works in the context of her oeuvre, most of them have never been seen before. This exhibition is therefore an opportunity to (re)discover this artist’s work and reappraise her place in a history of Portuguese contemporary art in urgent need of other narratives.
