"Death By Chocolate"

07.02.2009 - 22.03.2009

daadgalerie

As part of the program "Forum expanded" of the Berlinale international film festival 2009, the daadgalerie presents two recent works by Dan Graham, who was a guest of the Berliner Kuenstlerprogramm/DAAD in 1976. Death By Chocolate: West Edmonton Shopping Mall (1986-2005), 2005 captures the bizarre aesthetic universe, architecture and consumer-culture of a Canadian shopping mall over a period of twenty years. Surfaces, décor and reflections are also a the main motif in the slide-series "New Jersey" (2006). Already in several works in the 1960s Graham focused on suburban state New Jersey that lies within the metropolitan areas of New York and Philadelphia. In 2006 and with an almost ethnographic camera perspective, Graham carried out another investigation of traces and reflections of the present circumstances.
Parallel to this exhibition, the Berliner Künstlerprogramm/DAAD will, for the first time, present its collection of catalogues and publications from the late 1960s till today.

On Friday 23 January, 7 pm Dan Graham will give a lecture and talk at Hamburger Bahnhof (Aktionsraum). (moderated by Gregor Stemmrich, English, free admission)

On Thursday 26 February, 7 pm Christine Nippe will give an introductory lecture in the daadgalerie on "Dan Graham’s Reflections of Urban Spaces". (German, free admission)
