WILLEM DE ROOIJ
"Slit or Gloved"

22 January – 13 March 2010
Opening Reception on Friday, 22 January, 7-9 p.m.

Under the title ”Slit or Gloved“ Willem de Rooij (b. 1969, lives in Berlin) shows two new works, a large-scale woven work, “Vertigo’s Doll”, 2010, and a flower bouquet, “Bouquet V”, 2010. For the work “Vertigo’s Doll”, Willem de Rooij commissioned hand-woven fabric from a workshop outside Berlin. A piece measuring 135 x 430 cm, uses a specified mixture of unbleached linen and silver and gold coloured metal threads to show a gradual transition from silver to gold in ten stages. This coarse linen, shot through with silver and gold coloured threads, is mounted on a stretcher.
Willem de Rooij first produced a linen work of this kind with the title “Silver to Gold” in 2009 for the Athens Biennale. This first version was industrially produced in a linen mill near Brussels and consists of five stretchers (each 215 x 135 cm). The material for this work too is a mixture of unbleached linen and silver and gold-coloured metal threads. The difference from the new work is that here the graduated transition from silver to gold is achieved by five graduated changes in the mixture, so that each one of the five wooden stretchers is in this case covered with a monochrome fabric, the first of these canvases being silver and the last gold. The title of the new work, “Vertigo’s Doll”, and the title of the entire exhibition, “Slit or Gloved” are both anagrams of the words ‘silver to gold’.
“Bouquet V” is a flower arrangement, consisting of 95 different species of flowers. There is only one specimen of each flower in the bouquet. The work was developed for the “Slit or Gloved” exhibition by Willem de Rooij, in collaboration with the florist Mireille Ruch.
“Bouquet V” includes a detailed description, written by the artist, as well as a list of each species of flowers selected for the bouquet with their botanical names. For the duration of the exhibition any flower in the bouquet that wilts will be replaced by identical fresh specimen.
In February Willem de Rooij will participate with a new work in the exhibition series “Morality” in Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam. In June a solo-exhibition of the artist at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin will showcase a new installation entitled Intolerance".
