A MEMBER OF THE WEDDING
a curatorial project by Susanne M. Winterling

July 18 - August 29, 2008

“It happened that green and crazy summer when Frankie was twelve years old. This was the summer when for a long time she had not been a member. She belonged to no club and was a member of nothing in the world. Frankie had become an unjoined person who hung around in doorways, and she was afraid.”
Carson McCullers

Daniel Reich Gallery is very pleased to present the curatorial project “A Member of the Wedding” by artist Susanne M. Winterling. This exhibition includes Endre Aalrust, Kaucyila Brooke, Adrian Hermanides, Nadira Husain, Ruth May, Dag Nordbrenden, Paulette Phillips, Lecia Dole-Recio and T.J. Wilcox. “A Member of the Wedding” assembles artworks possessing an enigmatic silence, which upon closer inspection yield specific stories and dramas. The exhibition concerns the complex networks in which artworks are conceived in terms of positions and intrinsic dialogues as well as the way these networks and interests are reignited, altered and continued by placement in close proximity. “A Member of the Wedding” is an assemblage, and walking through the show we have the sense of an unlikely gathering - populated by the aesthetics and material choices of individual artists and their subjects forming a curious yet coherent set of characters. There is the sense of a realist drama including outcasts, celebrated characters and particular subcultures. This invisible rapport readies the senses and faculties to engage with the artworks.
