FACE TO FACE. THE DAROS COLLECTIONS
Part I: October 5, 2007 – February 17, 2008
Face to Face is the first exhibition to present both Daros Collections in combination. Works in a wide variety of media and from cultures in the West and Latin America have been brought together in thoughtfully selected juxtapositions. Unexpected and exciting points of contact as well as provocative art historical contrasts will unsettle ingrained Eurocentric thinking. However, the emphasis is on what these works share rather than what divides them. This thought-provoking presentation from the rich holdings of the two Daros Collections will draw attention to the specific qualities and similarities of both collections and will enhance the appreciation of their respective cultural histories. Face to Face takes viewers on a journey through the history of art in the second half of the 20th century, and across continents and countries from Germany to the Dominican Republic and from Santiago de Chile to New York. Icons of the art world meet up with artists still largely unknown in Europe. Despite the extremely distinct and different approaches taken by the artists represented here, they share profound and fundamental interests: in people as spiritual and physical beings, in their existential framework, in the economic and social conditions in which they live and also, in the specific situation of the artists themselves.
The Daros Collection, acquired in the 1980s and 1990s, consists of some 280 works created over the past fifty years by thirty artists from the U.S.A. and Europe.
The Daros-Latinamerica Collection was established in 2000. It contains approximately 1000 works by 100 artists from Latin America, also from the past five decades.
Face to Face, Part 1, will present works by the following artists: Luis Fernando Benedit, Joseph Beuys, Luis Camnitzer, Iván Capote, Antonio Caro, Nicola Costantino, Antonio Dias, Gonzalo Díaz, Leandro Erlich, Robert Gober, Víctor Grippo, Eva Hesse, Rebecca Horn, Charles Juhász-Alvarado, Barbara Kruger, Guillermo Kuitca, Nelson Leirner, Sherrie Levine, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Jorge Macchi, Cildo Meireles, Priscilla Monge, Vik Muniz, Bruce Nauman, Hélio Oiticica, Raquel Paiewonsky, Sigmar Polke, Jackson Pollock, Miguel Angel Ríos, Chemi Rosado-Seijo, Rosemberg Sandoval, Tonel, Andy Warhol
