David Kordansky Gallery is pleased to present the first U.S. solo exhibition by the German born, London based artist Markus Amm. Amm works in a variety of media including painting, collage, sculpture and photography. The exhibition includes a series of seven paintings and one sculpture. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, November 25th from 6 to 9pm, and the exhibition will be on view through January 6th, 2007.

Markus Amm’s work is marked by an acute interest in the development of painting using a geometric formal vocabulary. Throughout his work, Amm constructs core compositions made of elementary shapes – circles, squares, and rectangles – which are intersected by and entwined with parallel and crossing lines. Experimenting with alternative ways of painting, Amm executes these familiar compositions with stunningly de-familiarizing choices of color, material, and surface treatments.

Markus Amm’s new large-scale paintings are composed of neutral, faded canvas backgrounds pasted with layers of ripped, monochromatic, enamel-coated newsprint. The saturated tones of blue, white, green and red paint, which Amm rolls vigorously onto the newsprint, retain a dynamic viscous quality. The works intuitively allude to décollagiste activity but evade the representational and textual reminders of this tradition. Instead, Amm creates a self-reflexive aesthetic, quoting his own formal vocabulary from previously made paintings, collages, drawings, and photograms. Amm’s geometric abstractions derive from a physical manipulation of painted newsprint and collage. The effect becomes evocative of the layers of history found on building facades worn by constant postering. His paintings assert seductiveness through the rigor of geometry, a seemingly industrial perfection, and a manual proficiency that arrives at painting through alternate means.

Markus Amm has recently had solo exhibitions at Galerie Karin Guenther, Hamburg, Germany, The Breeder, Athens, Greece, and Herald St, London, England. He has participated in Dereconstruction, Gladstone Gallery, New York, NY, Alles. In einer Nacht, Tanya Bonakdar, New York, NY, Formalismus, Kunstverein Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany and the 2002 Manifesta, Frankfurt, Germany. He is included in the Triumph of Painting 4: Germania opening in 2007 at the Saatchi Gallery, London, England.
