Will Fowler
February 17 - March 17, 2007

David Kordansky Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by Will Fowler. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, February 17th from 6 to 9pm, and the works will be on view through March 17th. In new, large canvases Fowler reinvigorates and expands upon concerns with scale, facture, decorative pile-ups, shattered repetition, and color’s primary, never-resolved threat to form.

Fowler employs a vocabulary of jarring scale shifts and roughly hewn repeated forms: circles, spots, dots, blotches, knife-edge triangles, and layers of broken white grids that, in the words of the artist, “animate rather than negate the shapes underneath”.Elaborate “planning and un-planning” occupies Fowler’s approach - a practice that often leads to paintings that take him years to complete.

Fowler’s paintings grow out of elements culled from previous paintings. Recognizable images and geometric shapes are arranged like fragmented quotations, requesting attention and resisting subsumption into the painting process. Acutely aware of the relationships and “spatial tradeoffs” between his oppositional forms, Fowler combines images, concepts and even emotions that perhaps were never meant to be together. Initially appearing frenetic and consuming, Fowler’s layered paintings insist upon perception as an investigative, not passive, process.

Will Fowler is a Los Angeles based artist. This is Fowler’s second solo exhibition at David Kordansky Gallery. He will have a solo exhibition at White Columns, New York, NY in September of this year. In 2006 he participated in the group exhibitions Dereconstruction, curated by Matthew Higgs at Gladstone Gallery, New York, NY; Cloudbreak, organized by David Kordansky, at Hiromi Yoshii, Tokyo, Japan; (keep feeling) fascination: recent abstract painting in Los Angeles at the Luckman Gallery, Cal State L.A., Los Angeles, CA;Hotel California, at Glendale College Art Gallery, Glendale, CA; Concepts from Painting, curated by Martin Prinzhorn, AR/GE Kunst Galerie Museum/Galleria Museo, Bolzano, Italy.
