EMILIA AZCÁRATE

Distrito 4 Contemporary Art Gallery has the pleasure of presenting the exhibition of Emilia Azcárate.
The show includes paintings and sculptures of big and small format done in the past two years.
The artist, exploring her interest in taking painting on to another tridimensional level, offers a series of works elaborated with a scalpel that show a tension between form and ,meaning. In words of Emilia: “the stroke of the blade is as accurate as the brush, but the result is a loosening and transformation of the shape which ends with the birth of a sculpture.”
The artist does on the canvas a series of cuts that cross the picture border line showing the painting reverse, even the skeleton of the work. While in the notebooks she does a number of cuts from its interior to its exterior disarticulating the original support and converting them into unique objects.
The sculptures, resting on the ground, or directly on the wall, are like the heart of painting, the same figure and form on different support systems show the obsession of the artist for pictorial essence and for the necessity to transcend its own limits.
Emilia Azcárate (Caracas, 1964) graduated in Visual Arts in Saint Martin’s School of Art in London in the eighties. She has conducted workshops and residencies in Venezuela and Trinidad, for more than a decade she lives and works in Madrid.
Azcárate starts to exhibit her works during the begining of the nineties and has continued to show her works since then. She has had solo shows in Galería Farías Fábregas (Caracas), Periférico Caracas, Casa de América (Madrid), Caribbean Contemporary Arts 7 (Trinidad), el Museo Alejandro Otero y la Sala Mendoza (Caracas). The artist has also participated in group shows in numerous institutions and bienals, Museo de Arte Moderno de Ecuador, the Bienal of Sao Paulo, the Bienal of Prague, the Bienal of La Habana and the Museo de Arte Moderno Jesús Soto. He work is represented in important ionternational collections such as Colección Cisneros-Fontanals (CIFO), Museo Alejandro Otero, Colección Berezdivin, Puerto Rico, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas, Colección Banco España, Madrid and Fundación Coca Cola, Spain among others.
