JOSÉ LOUREIRO
"Minibar"

José Loureiro , the distinguished Portuguese artist is showing his work for the first time in Spain, at Gallery Distrito Cu4tro, with a show entitled Minibar.
Loureiro has always had his particular vision, untroubled by the vicissitudes of the art world. He has concentrated on an exploration of the limits of painting. From the end of the 80s Loureiro has subjected his work to a continuous process of revision, exploring painting in a creative way so that it attains a level of development he considers appropriate for him. His accumulated knowledge and experience in putting the practical and conceptual limitations of painting to the test have resulted in specific visual effects and in the breaking down of barriers between what is intentional and what is accidental, between model and motive, the opaque and the transparent, what is composed and what is haphazard, perspective and space, between concealment and profundity, repetition and spontaneity, structural rigour and utter arbitrariness. The painting of Jose Loureiro draws its strength from the tension of opposites.
Outstanding among his recent exhibitions are A Palabra at the Portuguese Cinematheque, Cadeiras Amestradas, Gallery Joao Esteves de Oliveira, Lisbon, Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art, Lisbon, Chiado 08, Emmerico Nunes Cultural Centre, Sines and the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Oporto.
Some of the group shows in which he has taken part are: Multiples Direcçoes, Contemporary Art Museum of Chiado, Lisbon, Corpo Intermitente – Obras de Colecçao de Arte de Fundaçao Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento O Poder da Arte, Serralves na Assemblea de Republica, Figuraçao e Desfiguraçao – An Inventory of signs, stories and portraits, The Contemporary Art Museum of Serralves, Oporto, Contemporary Art from Portugal, European Central Bank, Frankfurt.
