RUI TOSCANO
"Cluster"

Rui Toscano lives and works in Lisbon, where he was born in 1970. His visual approach comes from painting. He started to paint and gain some visual awareness at Ar.Co, school of visual art, and later at Lisbon School of Fine, then he switched over smoothly to sculpture. Since then his work has been triggered and informed by everyday film, rock music, sound – my interest in sound springs from the fact that I am a visual artist with a strong relation to music. I listen to music more than I see art – and monochrome, which he has used, explored, crossed over and expanded in all sorts of directions in his videos and sculptures. He has over the years uncovered a great capacity for enriching his field of creative possibilities, his systems of reference and the formal solutions for his work through the resources offered by the different media (sculpture, sound, video, installation, design). Toscano is also a copious drawer.

This exhibition takes its title from the most recent piece of work shown here, Cluster (2008), acrylic on paper, 130 x 130 cm., which can be seen on the upper floor of the gallery, as well as 100 Rádios Mortas and Wave Field, both sculptures completed in 2007. On the lower floor is T for Tornado, a work on DVD shown by Distrito Cu4tro on its stand, exclusively dedicated to Rui Toscano , in Art Nova, at the Art Basel Miami Beach fair in December’07.

In 2004 Espacio Distrito Cu4tro showed Sampa Works by Rui Toscano . Other solo shows by the artist are T for Tornado, Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art, Lisbon (2007), Slow Motion, Porta 33, Funchal, The Exorcist, Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art, Lisbon (2004), 1, Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto (2002), 2, Campo Alegre Theatre, Porto. And, among the group shows, Expanded Painting, Prague Bienniale 2 (2005), Designs A to Z, Colecçao Madeira Corporate Services, Porta 33 Funchal (2005), 20+1 Portuguese Artists in the Collection CGAC, Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea, Santiago de Compostela (2004), Fragments and Memories of Paulistan, Vol 1, Galeria Luisa Strina Sao Paulo (2004).
