MIRCEA CANTOR
5775 (Part I)
31 January - 7 March 2015

Dvir Gallery is happy to present the third solo exhibition by artist Mircea Cantor (b. 1977, Romania) at the gallery. The show is presented across the two main gallery spaces with a new body of work. The title, 5775 (Part I), references the number of years elapsed since the creation of the world according to the Jewish calendar.

Cantor’s departure point for this show are only selected themes from the bible, that he revisited in his own way. Zera (“the seed” in Hebrew) is a huge wall drawing made out of blasting caps that will be made in the gallery’s main space. Other works in the show includes photography, a set of concrete sculptures and a new series of drawings made in Japanese ink. The works bring to mind The Foundation Pit, the satirical novel by Andrei Platonov, a wonderfully gloomy account of an attempted project to build a gigantic dwelling to house the world’s entire population of proletarians. Cantor’s works move between past and future, tradition and progress, seeking to tackle the human condition in present times.
