YANAI TOISTER
Keepers of the Light
December 16th, 2010 - January 29th, 2011

For several years the artist and curator, Yanai Toister, has been investigating a diverse variety of photographic practices. At this, his first solo exhibition at the Dvir Gallery, Toister will unveil a fresh piece of work specifically designed for Dvir’s Nahum Street gallery. This latest presents twenty-one large-format photographs that were executed without the use of a camera. Toister's work papers the interior of the gallery with the façade of Tel Aviv's Dan Hotel (Yaakov Agam, 1970).

The exhibition is named "Keepers of the Light", alluding to a book of the same title that dealt with traditional photographic techniques. While most of the techniques are no longer employed, the rubric connects this contemporary work by Toister to questions concerning the photographer's place in (and possible disappearance from) a world that contains an infinity of photographs, as well as to the unresolved question of copyright.

Yanai Toister, a graduate of Bezalel and Cal-Arts, has had a number of solo exhibitions including his 2003 showing at the Tel Aviv Artists’ Studios Gallery, a 2005 exhibition at the Tal Esther Gallery in Tel Aviv and his 2007 presentation at the Sandroni.Rey Gallery in Los Angeles. Toister was the 2008 recipient of the Tel Aviv museum Constantiner photography award for an Israeli artist. He has also displayed works in numerous group exhibitions in Israel and abroad, amongst which were exhibitions at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Tel Aviv Museum, the Haus Lange Museum in Krefeld, Germany, the Architecture Biennale in Venice, the Herzliya Biennale and the Biennale of Landscape Urbanism in Bat Yam. Concurrently, he also has works on show at the Petach Tikva Museum, in an exhibition entitled "Pleated Blinds".
