DEYSON GILBERT & ROBERTO WINTER
The State of the Art
February – May 2013
The elba benítez gallery is pleased to present exhibition The State of the Art, the newest installment of the ongoing project elba benítez in kvadrat, an exhibition program which offers emerging artists an opportunity to showcase their work in the Kvadrat showroom in Madrid.
For the exhibition, the elba benítez gallery has invited one of Brazil’s leading young galleries – the Mendes Wood Gallery from São Paulo – to present the work of two of its most innovative young artists, Deyson Gilbert and Roberto Winter. For the occasion, Deyson Gilbert (Brazil, 1985) and Roberto Winter (Brazil, 1983) have prepared a collaborative exhibition entitled The State of the Art consisting of new and recent works and including a number of new, site-specific works produced in situ in the Kvadrat showrooms.
Whether working individually or as a team, Gilbert and Winter create artworks that combine stronglyexpressed critique of current-day social and political issues with informed references to art history, particularly (although not exclusively) conceptually oriented art of recent generations. Their collaborative projects generally unite technology (Winter is a trained scientist) with the language of cuttingedge contemporary art, and range freely across various media, such as sculpture, photography and installations.
Deyson Gilbert studied Fine Art at the University of São Paulo. He has participated in group shows at SP-Arte (São Paulo), Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris), the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) and the Instituto Cervantes (São Paulo). Roberto Winter has participated in group shows at the Instituto Cervantes (São Paulo), the Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris) and the 7th Bienal do Mercosur (Porto Alegre). The opening of The State of the Art will coincide with ARCOmadrid 2013, in which the Mendes Wood Gallery participate for the first time in its history.
