During the Summer, we could see the slowly gliding big suits and painted canvases by Klaas Kloosterboer in the Submarine-wharf in the Rotterdam Harbour. Ten meters high, plane painted canvases, with sometimes one round hole, or more, and even words composed of little round holes. Next to it, enlarged gloves, costumes, and wooden crates. With inertial movement of one layer in front of another layer, he created a fluid, changeable and unstable installation, in which the artist refers to one of his latest additives to his set of rules: Anything can be Anything. Kloosterboer created an “open-end” piece, where form and meaning is never entirely pinned down.
Not moving, but “Open” is the exhibition at Ellen de Bruijne Projects. Open and straightforward, even raw, without too many distracting details: Two black paintings freestanding with the words “POOR” and “FOOL”; a white canvas with 14 polka dots; a rag-like canvas with cutout pieces stitched back; two chairs connected by a cord, one balancing. The artist seems to depart from a concrete language (métier), taking it into lightness and looseness. Paintings become set pieces, a canvas becomes a backdrop, the chairs a balancing act. Also in “Open” Kloosterboer creates a state of fluidness, and unstable meaning. And why should one want to be clear? Why should one deny the riddle, and say he knows something? Kloosterboer is working with the lightness of things and thoughts, without becoming light himself. In search for such an attitude, ideas play an important role, but then again he says:
“I certainly do not deny the importance of visual quality, and beauty.”
Klaas Kloosterboer lives and works in Amsterdam after attending the Rijksakademie there. He had solo exhibitions at the Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe (2003), and at Villa Roma, Florence (2010). As part of the Reykjavik Arts Festival (2009), he had a solo exhibition in Sudsudvestur. He participated in ‘Dumb painting’ at Centraal Museum, Utrecht (1992); ‘Bildraum Erweitert’ at Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle (1997) and The ‘Projection Project, Budapest episode’ at Kunsthalle, Budapest (2007). In 2009 Museum Boijmans van Beuningen presented work by Kloosterboer in The New Collection, and in 2011 he was part of the Maurice van Valen donation show in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. And still running until 29th September XXXL Painting with Klaas Kloosterboer, Chris Martin and Jim Shaw at the Submarine-wharf curated by Museum Boijmans director Sjarel Ex and curator Els Hoek.
