EXPRESSION AND RELIGION IN THE WORKS OF A SWISS PRIVATE COLLECTION

Religion was a topic of particular importance for many artists at the beginning of the 20th century. Especially Emil Nolde, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Max Beckmann produced a number of major works of a religious nature in the period around the First World War. In their depiction of motifs from the Old and New Testaments, especially in woodcuttings and etchings, they were uniquely successful in presenting the psychological substance of the scenes. In his drawings from the 1920s and 1930s, Louis Soutter produced a very personal development of Christian iconography. The exhibition presents around 70, especially Expressionist printed graphic works together with thematically related water colors and drawings. These works from a Swiss private collection are being shown in public for the first time. A catalogue accompanying the exhibition is published by Edition Folkwang/Steidl.
