In 1969, Museum Folkwang installed a studio for video editing, making it the first museum in Germany with the facilities to produce this then young medium. In recent years the archives from the studio, which was closed in 1994, have been digitalized and reworked by curator Sabine Maria Schmidt. The establishment of the new video studio has created space at Museum Folkwang for its collection of film and video art as well as alternating positions of contemporary media art.
The first presentation “Video Vision” recalls the early days of the video studio and the media experiments of the 1970s and 1980s. It shows artistic video works that were produced in the Folkwang studio. In addition, an archive room visualizes the diverse spectrum of the studio’s productions. After its installation in 1969 the studio was employed primarily for educational and documentary purposes. They produced films about artworks as well as interviews recorded with photographers. The medium of video was intended to help open up the museum as an institution and bring art closer to life.
