GROUP SHOW WITH GALLERY ARTISTS

From 28 January to 11 March, Fons Welters will be exhibiting work by some of the artists of the Gallery. Besides new work, the show will also feature works that were exhibited abroad some time over the past twelve months and are now enjoying their premiиre in the Netherlands.

How can any coherent story be written about artists as different as Maria Roosen, Merijn Bolink, Tom Claassen, Sven Kroner, Daniel Roth, Jennifer Tee, Gй-Karel van der Sterren, Monika Wiechowska and Yesim Akdeniz Graf? Do they share any common ground at all besides the exhibition space at Galerie Fons Welters? Or is it precisely in their work that we discern the gallery's strength, its spirit?
The objects of Merijn Bolink, like the reels of 'Blue Movie' (1971) that he manipulated into the shape of a sliced watering-can, are worlds apart from the mysterious photos of Monika Wiechowska. Her photo of mushrooms on a fallen tree-trunk seems stylised, unearthly, almost supernatural, even though it was shot in wholly natural surroundings. Wiechowska does not simply show things in a different light, but fires the imagination. She takes you to a lost place where you played hide-and-seek as a child, when things that now seem so normal were still new and provocative. Yesim Akdeniz Graf combines iconic images from art history with those of contemporary visual culture. A simple intervention fills existing images with new meaning and makes them unrecognisable. The sense of recognition aroused by the images finds nothing to cling to on the canvas. The resulting confusion entices us to look further, to rediscover the images that were already familiar to us. This is 'displacement', as in Bolink's objects, but in a concealed form.
The meeting of these different artists from Galerie Fons Welters in the group exhibition fascinates precisely because of the diversity, the artists' completely different approach to things. It is unreasonable to try to place these individual works under a single heading, other than that of Bloemstraat 140.
