Galeria Fortes Vilaça is pleased to present paintings by artist Marina Rheingantz. In these new, various-sized works in oil on canvas, Rheingantz furthers her research into the landscape, introducing narrative elements into the figurative/abstract web. In nearly empty spaces, architecture, furniture and objects become silent characters, yet nevertheless full of history, or memory.

In Camping, the work that provides the title for this exhibition, chairs converse in front of a trailer, situated within a green background. Although static, the scene suggests movement by the way the paint is applied in horizontal lines. The movement is accelerated in Brrrr, where a detail of the same trailer appears enlarged as though seen through a zoom lens from the window of another car, on a road. In framings of a photographic nature, movements of coming closer or moving away from the same scene propose a dialogue among the paintings.

Malha viária com Água [Road Grid with Water] emphasizes the geometric composition of what could be the vast area of a flood. Rich in blue tones, with sweeping brushstrokes of thin, runny paint, the composition is structured in oblique lines of blue on blue and small points – of light – in yellow. Merely sketched with quick brushstrokes of very light gray, a tractor occupies the upper left quadrant.

Geometry is also highlighted on the roof of the empty house pictured in Maipo, with outlines of light and shadow. These scenes are constructed with subdued tones of green, gray and blue, although a stronger red or yellow begins to gain space on the surface of a chair or parasol.

Marina Rheingantz is a member of the 2000_8 group and has been represented by Galeria Fortes Vilaça since 2008. Her most recent exhibitions have included Paralela 2010 and Heaven can Wait, at Tinderbox Gallery in Hamburg.
