Image Object is a group exhibition that considers the relationship between images and objects in the age of digital media. With prints, sculptures and collages by ANDREA LONGACRE-WHITE, TRAVESS SMALLEY, KATE STECIW, and ARTIE VIERKANT, the exhibition probes the ways in which artists negotiate both gallery space and online space. With visual content transposed and modified across digital platforms, notions of what an artwork can be are in flux, not unlike the way personal identities are shape-shifting across social networks. The works in Image Object reflect these developments.
ANDREA LONGACRE-WHITE mixes high-tech devices – digital cameras and scanners – with low-tech actions - folding, cutting, and tearing - to generate photography with a sculptural aura. The artist tears and cuts black-and-white photographs, which she scans, re-photographs, and reprints to produce striking abstractions. Any trace of the original context evaporates; yet, through her complex process, spectral colors, textures, and shapes emerge.
TRAVESS SMALLEY paints with pixels to produce optically dynamic videos, posters, sculptures, and prints. His abstractions play with consciousness and perception through his manipulations of high-resolution colors and forms. His series Composition in Clay I-III comprises scans of modeling clay arranged directly on the scanner’s glass, resulting in hypnotic prints with fluid, visceral textures and highly refined colors.
KATE STECIW’s collages, prints, sculptures, and videos embrace and undermine corporate design culture and its seductive narratives. Her wall-based works combine digitally reconstructed stock images with mass-produced objects to create composites that are familiar yet cryptic. Her Live, Laugh, Love #3 is derived from a piece of mass-produced, text-based wall-art that she bought online and then mangled into what looks very much like a Modernist metal sculpture.
ARTIE VIERKANT’s Image Objects are minimalist, geometric wall-prints that have the radiant, airbrushed look of a design company’s color swatch. They live as objects in the gallery and online as digital images derived from Photoshopped installation shots. His Possible Objects start as Tweets that suggest artworks that could be produced by himself or anyone else: here, he exhibits sculptures he produced that originated from his own prompting.
ANDREA LONGACRE-WHITE (1980, Radnor, PA) is based in Los Angeles. She studied at the Royal College of Art, London, and Hampshire College, MA.
