Fucares Gallery is pleased to present the fifth solo exhibition by Lluís Hortalà (Olot, Girona, 1959) in its Madrid space.
Hurqala, the title of this exhibition, refers to the Sufi land of resurrection, an 'intermediate’ world where metaphors as such do not exist, where symbols are something objective; it is the space where words such as 'emptiness’, 'immensity’ or 'vision’ aquire a level of reality similar to the rock itself.
Lluís Hortalà focuses on details of the geological structures of the “big” walls he has climbed, which, with the trompe-l’oeil ambiguity of relief, often evoke abstract paintings or sculpture. Drawn from memory, they are precise and sophisticated drawings on circular, flat or convex volumetric shapes.
These works represent an emotional response to the problems of perception resulting from his personal experiences in the landscape of the most iconic formations of mineral geography, such as the Riglos of Huesca or the Italian Dolomites. Captured on aerial journeys against the void, they are images of this land of visions, that intermediate world where metaphor becomes unnecessary.
Defined in terms of 'biographic reconstruction,' the exhibition consists of three tryptichs presented as simultaneous narratives. One refers to the rocks of Riglos, another to the Dolomites and, a third, where both are combined: in the Trentino, the north and west face of the Great Peak of Lavaredo - climbed by Hortalà in 1977 - and two of the Huescan Mallos, El Puro, of which he was the first to make a solo climb in 1978, and La Visera.
