MIKE KELLEY
"Hermaphrodite Drawings"
Tuesday, 6 February – Saturday, 17 March 2007
Opening reception for the artist: Tuesday, 6 February, from 6 – 8pm
Gagosian Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works on paper by Mike Kelley, collectively entitled the Hermaphrodite Drawings. This is Kelley's first exhibition with the gallery in London. In addition to the drawings, a group of Kelley's recent sculptures, that have not previously been exhibited will be shown.
The Hermaphrodite Drawings are large scale, often life-size, depictions of polymorphous body parts, evoking the grotesque and human forms seen in drawings by Picasso or de Kooning. Kelley's rigorous structural analysis and perverse wit are evident, along with a paradoxical display of draughtsmanship.
Mike Kelley was born in Detroit, MI in 1954 and has degrees from California Institute of the Arts and the University of Michigan. His work has been exhibited extensively, with solo shows at Musée du Louvre, Paris (2006); Tate Liverpool (2004); the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1993). He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
A fully-illustrated catalogue featuring an essay by Steven Stern will accompany the exhibition.
