HENRIQUE DE FRANÇA
Desenho Contado
22 February - 2 April, 2011

Henrique de França presents his first solo show at Galeria Leme’s Project Room. The artist brings a series of drawings, which pictures come from (or often are recreated from) old photographs. These images register ordinary or decisive moments of a person, a group, a society and even a generation. These pieces are not only image transfers onto paper, rather they are compositions of many fragments which generates new and often unexpected meanings.

The title refers to the narrative proposed by the drawings. This narrative is able to unfold itself into a story before the viewer’s eyes without, however, demanding a starting point or a specific ending. It allows us to free associate the described elements by connecting the path dots according to our personal experience and expectations.

Some of the show’s sections consist of small groups of drawings connected by a shared horizontal line. Just like a sequence of facts follows a timeline. Their horizontal orientation, in most of them, stresses the idea of continuity.

The artist’s proposition deals with issues of language in contemporary drawing, such as possibilities in composition, line, formal values and white spaces. Emptiness and unfinished elements are often present in his work, as if memory could better identify a piece of a remembrance then the other. These elements also make evident what is completed by memory and what is not. Erases and annulments represent, perhaps, the need to rewrite, or “re-draw” past while they try to change a trail that could redefine present time.

The reason why old scenes are brought to the core of these pieces is the approach on contemporary society formation through its development in religious traditions, in subserviency relations, in distancing and mainly in stories that leave traces when they vanish.

Henrique de França (São Paulo, 1982), lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil.
In 2010 the artist participated in the following group shows: XIII Salão Municipal de Artes Plásticas (SAMAP) de João Pessoa, PB, X Bienal do Recôncavo, BA e o 38o. Salão de Sto. André. In 2009 he was part of the group show Desenho Ocupado at Galeria Leme’s Project Room.
