Galerie b2 presents the exhibition PERFORMA by Mark Hamilton.

The exhibition combines installation, video and text-based wall works. On three tables, the arrangement of different models, replicas and ‘improvisations’ can be seen as the structural principle behind the overall presentation. The respective objects and material’s inherent concepts, ideas and forms instigate provocative semantic connections and disturbances between high and low, insider and outsider culture. The scale replica of a light switch, a fake On Kawara date painting, the model of a ‘white label’ record – such constellations of objects construct a tangle of reference and association.

The use of visual signs in PERFORMA quotes the structural method of dub, by which music may be arbitrarily varied by means of sound effects. As an instrument, the apparatus is upgraded, as the ‘producer’ becomes the ‘performer’.

Alongside video screens and digital printing, PERFORMA also utilizes materials referring to traditional craftsmanship but also to more less-valued amateur forms of handwork, such as string, chipboard and paint. The exhibition venue and its address – a former cotton mill on the outskirts of (post) industrial Leipzig – is reflected as a sign (constructed in hand-made wooden modules), in turn reflecting on the site’s development from industrial-modernist factory to a location currently famed for the production and presentation of (post-modern) cultural products.
