Opening: 13.06.2019 from 7pm untill 10pm
A group exhibition with Ana Alenso, Ada Van Hoorebeke, Okka-Esther Hungerbühler, Cosima zu Knyphausen, kate-hers RHEE curated by Marie-Christin Lender
Within the frame of the exhibition programme SoS (Soft Solidarity), conceived by Nataša Ilić and Solvej Helweg Ovesen
The act of coming together in a circle, as well as arranging objects in circles, has long served as a method for finding solutions to complex problems and as a tool for dealing with many-faceted contexts. Sitting Circles, the title of the exhibition, is to be understood ambiguously: it refers to the spatial arrangement of the artistic works and the existing relations of materials and elements within them, but it is also a metaphor and concept for social and cultural interactions, structures and circulations.
The yearly programme of Galerie Wedding SoS (Soft Solidarity) explores the current need to reinvent new forms and motivations of solidarity. Against this backdrop, the group exhibition Sitting Circles brings together works by five artists that examine how objects and our material environment are in close interaction with social, ecological, cultural and individual processes.
Topics and practices emerge, attain and lose currency, are forgotten and then reappear in consciousness. Things are created for a purpose, are reused or placed in a new context. An ever-changing and complex environment continually challenges us to respond to it and to become active. Changes require exchange.
The works by Ana Alenso, Ada Van Hoorebeke, Okka-Esther Hungerbühler, Cosima zu Knyphausen and kate-hers RHEE draw connections that offer options for action and new perspectives. In which way could visual artistic practices, working with materials and objects, reflect our thoughts and emotions in the past, present and future? And how do they come together in the space of Galerie Wedding?
