The Natural Order of Things
25 May - 31 July 2012
Galleria Fonti is pleased to present “The Natural Order of Things”, Eric Wesley’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.
The new project by Eric Wesley seems to pick up where the artist’s last project at Galleria Fonti in 2006 left off. In You say tomato, I say tomato, the artist presented the viewer with the two absolute forms of creation, the dichotomy of matter: two “tomatoes” which were either “grown” (additive form) or conversely “carved” (subtractive form). In The Natural Order of ThingsWesley expounds on the notion of nature versus human intervention or creativity.
The exhibition consists of a performative installation that the artist identifies as the first stage of a revolution: the relocation to the lower floor where the gallery is located of all material from the upper floor of the building, a sort of a personal storage of the gallery. That signifies a rotational movement with the measure of one quarter in relation to the ideal cross section of the building.
The intent is to establish a context of positive change and development in terms of both the physical and the intangible. A simple, rudimentary operation to construct a rule which set literally the art work in motion. Through connecting the physical and natural occurrence a revolution (rotation) to the spiritual and political notions that becomes a glimpse of the profound importance of art in life presenting itself.
«The rule is simple: “this” comes from “above”, “here” becomes “there”, in turn what is “here” is now “there” and so on until a circle is identified. The equation yields a sequence which is initiated but unresolved. The artist is only responsible for a push...to set something in motion».
Showed in the office area of the galley, a model of both the gallery space as well as the upper floor complete with all the real furniture and objects in 1:18 scale realized using a computer program for 3D images. The model becomes memory, present reality and possible future of form as the pieces in scale that compose it could be changed making it interactive as well as the real object moved from the upper floor to the gallery could be moved again.
An artist book containing documents and artworks about the project The Natural Order of Things will beavailable on line soon.
