About a work #9
6 - 17 October 2015

‘Coupe de Mall’ is also the title a project in London where a symbolic, simplified Shopping Centre is being created, date tbc, for one night only. The works on display at ZERO... derive from, illustrate and anticipate this display.

The secession of the middle class from general society, the completion of their project of self-determination, and their vertical aspirations to form channels of community with existing and new elites – all set the scene.

Some alarmist news stories earlier this year spoke of alleged threats to attack western shopping centres. It could seem like a revolutionary promise, but its not, and taking photographs for source material can be mistaken for reconnaissance. The dematerialization of the city is mirrored in 'Coupe de Mall' where a parallel consumer zone exists in an alternate system, and where tactics of secessionist disappearance are used for other purposes.

With sound by Georgie Nettell.
