"Domain Field"

July 17 - September 2, 2009

How do you make memory? What is the relationship between memory and anticipation? Can you make something that is physical which at the same time evokes the process of remembering? All of these questions and more are explored by Antony Gormley in his celebrated work Domain Field, made up of hundreds of sculptures of human forms.

Domain Field was originally commissioned by the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in the UK in 2003. Volunteers aged from two to 85 were moulded in plaster by teams of specially trained staff. The moulds were then used to construct the sculptures by welding stainless steel bars of eight different lengths together inside each of them. In this spectacular installation, 287 Domain sculptures fill the main section of the Garage space.
